Maddison Marks Emotional Return as Tottenham Beat Coventry for First League Win
James Maddison called his comeback goal a “dream” moment after helping Tottenham earn their first Premier League victory of the season with a 3–1 win over Coventry City.
Making his first start in 526 days after consecutive knee injuries, Maddison opened the scoring in the 14th minute. His first-time finish lifted Spurs and was followed by his familiar darts celebration.
Coventry Fight Back After the Break
Maddison was influential throughout an evenly contested first half, but Coventry drew level four minutes after the restart through Jack Rudoni. The goal sparked a lively spell as both teams pushed for the lead.
Tottenham restored their advantage in the 58th minute when Omar Marmoush found the net. With several players forced off with fitness problems, Dejan Kulusevski then made his long-awaited return after 17 months out.

Ben Davies added a third, his effort beating Carl Rushworth and ensuring Spurs’ first league win came on a night that also saw Kulusevski return to action.
Maddison: “Those Are the Moments You Dream Of”
Maddison said he had spoken with the manager during the week and felt ready to return to the starting XI after a stop-start beginning to the campaign.
“I just wanted to play well, show my quality and show what the team’s missed in the last 18 months, or whatever it is since my last start.”
The midfielder said scoring again made the long recovery worthwhile. He also shared in Kulusevski’s emotion at returning to the pitch after such a lengthy absence.
“They’re the ones you dream of. Without going too deep into it, in those dark days last year, recovering from the ACL, you dream of those moments, those goals. That is the light at the end of the tunnel.”
Lampard Sees Encouragement Despite Defeat
Coventry manager Frank Lampard felt his side had performed well enough to take something from the match, particularly while the score remained 2–1. He said Tottenham’s quality in key moments ultimately proved decisive.
“A really good display. 3–1 changes the view at the end of the game, but I thought at 2–1 we were really pushing,” Lampard said.
The result gave Tottenham a much-needed lift, while Coventry were left to reflect on a spirited display that did not bring a reward.
