Carrick Challenges Fernandes’ Tactical Criticism After Manchester United’s Heavy Como Defeat
Michael Carrick and Bruno Fernandes appeared to disagree over Manchester United’s approach after a 4–1 Champions League defeat to Como left the coach under growing pressure.
United were beaten at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia Stadium on Wednesday, suffering their fifth loss in 11 matches this season. The result also extended their winless run to seven games.
Fernandes Questions United’s Pressing Plan
Fernandes, who was substituted in the 67th minute, suggested United’s decision not to press man-to-man had left space for Como to exploit.
“It was a decision from the staff to not press man-to-man and sometimes leave space behind,” Fernandes said.
Asked about the captain’s comments, Carrick pushed back, arguing that the team’s effort mattered more than the system.

“We actually were half-pressed man-to-man in the second half and then conceded a goal from that,” Carrick said.
“Whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play, if you don’t run, and you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you aren’t going to win.”
Carrick Focuses on the Supporters
The defeat intensified questions about Carrick’s future. He signed a two-year contract in May after guiding United to third place in the Premier League, but the club’s recent form has put him under pressure.
Asked whether he was concerned about being dismissed, Carrick said he was focused on the supporters and the team’s performance rather than his own position.
“I’ve not given my own position any thought. This is for the supporters; I was one of them watching that, and I wasn’t happy at all.”
“I’m really angry, to be honest. We might win, we might lose, but the way we went about it tonight wasn’t acceptable. I just wanted to let the fans know that I feel for them.”
The public disagreement between captain and coach adds another challenge for United as they look to end their poor run and restore confidence among their supporters.
