After Mbappé’s Absence, Zidane Backs Dembélé as France’s Leader
Zinedine Zidane has identified Ousmane Dembélé as one of the most important figures in the France squad, describing the Paris Saint-Germain forward as “already a leader” even though he does not wear the captain’s armband.
France were preparing to face Belgium in the Nations League, with Zidane taking charge of his second match after opening his tenure with a win away to Turkey. Les Bleus were looking to strengthen their position at the top of the group.
Kylian Mbappé’s absence shaped much of the discussion. The Real Madrid forward was ruled out for the rest of the international break with pain in his left knee, leaving Zidane to consider how best to adjust the attack without confirming who would take over the captaincy.
Dembélé’s Growing Influence
Zidane believes Dembélé has already assumed a leadership role within the dressing room through his personality, experience and support for his teammates.
“For me, Dembélé is already a leader. He performs this role even if he is not the official captain, and that is clear. He is a wonderful person, he always supports others, and we must make use of his experience,” Zidane said.
Dembélé was expected to lead France’s attack against Belgium after impressing in the same role he occupies for Paris Saint-Germain. Zidane praised his commitment, energy and ability to maintain his intensity throughout a full match.
“In Turkey, he played in the same position he occupies with Paris Saint-Germain, and he performed that role excellently. He has wonderful commitment and dedication, immense energy, and he can easily play a full 90 minutes,” Zidane explained.
France’s Options Without Mbappé
When asked about possible replacements for Mbappé, Zidane highlighted Désiré Doué and Bradley Barcola. He sees both players as dynamic wide attackers capable of changing a match through speed, direct running and one-on-one ability.
“Doué and Barcola are two young players with great dynamism, and they are extremely interesting. I like this type of player because they can make the difference from the wings,” Zidane said.
Rayan Cherki has also impressed the manager, although Zidane prefers to use him in midfield rather than as a wide forward.
“He can play in several positions, but I prefer him in midfield. He can receive the ball between the lines, provide wonderful passes and be really dangerous when he plays vertically,” Zidane said.
Zidane Warns France About Belgium
Zidane expects Belgium to provide a serious test. He praised their quality, their performances on the international stage and the individual talent within their squad.
“They are a very good team. They delivered a great performance at the World Cup and have distinguished players individually. We know it will be a great match,” he said.
A Reunion with Mark van Bommel
The match also brought Zidane up against Mark van Bommel, an old rival from his playing days. Zidane recalled the former midfielder’s personality and the influence he had on the pitch.
“I admired his style. He had a strong character and a distinctive presence on the pitch,” Zidane said.
Zidane ended with a message to his players about appreciating their time with the national team.
“Football passes quickly. I am 54 years old and I am no longer able to play, so I tell them to enjoy the moment, because it passes quickly,” he said.
